New York Da due secoli New York è la principale porta
d'ingresso degli Stati Uniti. Decine di generazioni d’immigrati europei sono
passate ai piedi della Statua della Libertà dopo un lungo viaggio in mare. Adesso
i turisti e uomini d’affari accedono alla città molto più comodamente tramite
uno dei suoi tre aeroporti internazionali. Si può raggiungere New York da
qualsiasi capitale europea con poche ore di volo.
Perché visitare New York? Innanzitutto,
definirla una semplice città è molto riduttivo. Vivono nel suo territorio oltre 8 milioni di persone ripartite
in cinque distretti: Manhattan, Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn e Staten Island. La sua
architettura è completamente diversa da quella delle città europee, una
grandezza che lascia stupefatti i turisti sin dalla loro prima visita alla
città. Le principali attrazioni turistiche sono concentrate a Manhattan, centro
storico e nevralgico degli stessi Stati Uniti d'America. Giunti a New York dall’Europa
si può iniziare facilmente l’esplorazione degli States in coast to coast noleggiando un'automobile. Per
chi risiede soltanto pochi giorni è consigliabile recarsi in visita alla vicina
città di Washington, distante soltanto 380 km dalla Grande Mela. I collegamenti
interni (treno, bus, aerei) permettono al turista di muoversi ad elevata
velocità e senza particolari disagi. In mezz'ora di aereo si arriva da New York a Washington, i voli sono frequenti e poco costosi.
New York da il nome anche allo stato, pochi
europei però sono a conoscenza che la vera capitale dello stato è Albany, una
città 250 km più a nord.
